Kufri is a hill resort station located in the district of Shimla, India. It is situated 20 kilometers from the capital city of the state Shimla and is located on National Highway No. 22. The name Kufri originates from “kufr” which means “lake” in the local language.
How to reach Kufri by flight?
Shimla Airport is the nearest airport to reach Kufri (located at a distance of 34 km). Even though major airlines offer flights to Shimla airport, however, they are not frequent. We suggest traveling to Chandigarh airport (138 kilometers from Kufri) since it is well-linked to the major cities and flights operate more frequently from different regions of the country. Taxis and buses are also available regularly from there. It takes 3-4 hours to reach Kufri.
Safety Tips: You might have to confirm the flight at the very last minute, because bad weather or fog may cause delays in flights.
How to reach Kufri by train?
Kufri is approximately 16 km distant from Shimla railway station. Buses, taxis, cabs and toy trains are available to reach Kufri. Trains frequently run to this railway station from different cities across India. Alternately, you can also travel to Chandigarh Railway Station and then you can hire a taxi or cab, buses are also available. It can take around 4 hours to reach Kufri from Chandigarh.
How to reach Kufri by road?
Kufri has good connectivity with the towns around it and is easily accessible via roads from all areas. There are numerous buses, both government and private, that connect Shimla, Rampur and Narkanda to Kufri. Local transports are also available. If your goal is to view the most stunning sceneries, then the road trip towards Kufri is something you must do.
Safety Tips: The smaller roads towards the top are filthy and muddy, which makes it less risky, particularly during winter and monsoon seasons.

Best time to visit: While the climate in Kufri is pleasant throughout the season but the most ideal season to go to Kufri is from April to June and December to February. The temperatures in Kufri remain comfortable during the summer months, which is ideal for walking, picnics, and visiting.

- Wear warm clothes even if it’s not cold when you begin your journey from Shimla.
- If you make a plan to go to Mahasu Peak, make sure to travel on horseback as roads are muddy and dirty.
- Don’t forget to carry enough cash on hand to pay for essential expenses while visiting Kufri, because you won’t see ATMs in the area.
- If you plan to visit in December or January, be prepared for an intense snowfall. We recommend that you dress appropriately and be careful always.
